âIF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM, YOUâVE GOT TO SOLVE IT. BECAUSE THAT PROBLEM IS GOING TO GET BIGGER IN SIX MONTHS.â
â MARY BARRA
MELINDA GATES
PHILANTHROPIST
Once upon a time, a girl dreamed of using technology to make the world a better place.
At school, Melinda adored her teacher, Mrs. Bauer, who convinced the school to build a computer lab. Melinda loved the lab and all the shiny computers, but most of all, she loved coding because it felt like solving a puzzle.
In college, she stayed up late coding in her schoolâs spooky old basement. She and her friends held contests: who could program the fastest with the fewest mistakes? The loser had to touch the frog specimens in the biology lab!
New software programs were released every year. Melinda wanted to be part of it, so after college she worked at a small computer company called Microsoft. That small company grew into a giant one.
When Melinda met the companyâs co-founder, Bill Gates, she found out that he was funny, also loved puzzles, and shared her dream of improving the world. They eventually fell in love and got married. After having their first daughter, Melinda quit her job to focus on philanthropy, or giving her time and money to help others. She wanted to create real, lasting change.
âWhere should we start?â asked Bill.
âI want to help every girl make her dreams come true,â she replied. âWhen women and girls are treated equally, life is better for everyoneâ men and boys, too.â
Melinda decided she would provide women and girls with greater access to healthcare, education, and jobs. Together, she and Bill created the largest philanthropic organization in the world.
